Responsive ClassroomHighland School utilizes the Responsive Classroom approach to classroom management. This concept emphasizes the social and emotional development of children along with academics.
At the core of Responsive Classroom is social interaction. This can be teacher-student, teacher-parent, student-student, or student-parent. The goal is for teachers, parents, and students to work together to develop the social skills necessary for true academic and career success. |

Rule CreationClassroom rules are developed by the entire class. They are repeatedly modeled and practiced by teacher and students. Logical consequences are applied to situations in which a rule is broken. Students and teacher collaborate to solve problems non-punitively.

Positive LanguageThrough the proactive use of positive reinforcing, reminding, and redirecting language teachers can prevent problematic behavior before it arises. Opportunities for peer social interaction & discussion are provided in Morning and Afternoon Meeting.
