More About Reading
Reading consists of three components: Literature and Informational lessons, Foundational Skills lessons, and independent reading.
During the Literature and Informational lessons the students read a common text closely and share their thinking. I model strategies and skills the students can apply to the text. We work collaboratively and independently to identify text features, answer questions, determine authors' opinions, and more!
Our Foundational Skills lessons address reading skills that apply to all texts such as phonics, reading for a purpose, fluency (accuracy, rate, and expression), stamina, and evaluating texts for complexity. These skills are presented to the whole group and reinforced in small group or individual conferences.
Many students' favorite time of day is independent reading! We work throughout the year to build our stamina from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. The students select their own texts to read with guidance from me when necesssary. During this time I conference with students to work on reading skills or small groups to discuss their reading or work as a group to understand shared books.
